South Carolina State Election Commission Celebrates Record Turnout and Successful Election Day

COLUMBIA, SC (November 7, 2024) - The South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC) is pleased to announce the overwhelming success of the 2024 General Election and extends its sincere gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this monumental election. More than 2.5 million voters turned out to cast a ballot, breaking the previous record for total ballots cast that was set in 2020.

"South Carolina’s historic turnout reflects the deep commitment and passion of our voters and the increased accessibility made possible by our new early voting process. We commend the over 2.5 million South Carolinians who exercised their right to vote and engaged actively in our democracy," said Howie Knapp, Executive Director of the State Election Commission. "We are especially grateful for the dedication of our poll workers, whose tireless efforts are the foundation of secure and accurate elections."

Approximate Turnout from the 2024 General Election

  • Absentee – 108,000.
  • Early Voting – 1,472,000. New record (previously 893,000 in 2020 GE).
  • Election Day – 977,000.
  • Total Voter Turnout – 2,557,000. New record (previously 2,533,000 in 2020 GE). 
    • 4% voted absentee.
    • 58% voted early in person. Record high (previously 35% in 2020 GE).
    • 38% voted on Election Day.
  • Total Turnout Percentage – 75%.

South Carolinians Set New Records with Historic Pre-Election Day Turnout

COLUMBIA, SC (November 4, 2024) – South Carolina has wrapped up its early voting period and the State Election Commission (SEC) is reporting that there have been more than 1.5 million ballots cast in the 2024 General Election, which is the highest total of pre-election day ballots the state has ever seen in an election.

" We are thrilled to see this record-breaking turnout during the early voting period as we head into a highly anticipated Election Day,” said Howie Knapp, Executive Director of the SEC. “If you haven’t cast your ballot yet, get to the polls tomorrow and exercise your right to vote.”

*While current early voting laws were not established until 2022, in-person and by-mail absentee voting was available to all voters in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early voting is over, but Election Day is tomorrow, November 5. Make sure you are prepared!

  • Polling places will open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Check your sample ballot and polling place at scVOTES.gov before leaving to vote. 
  • You will be asked to present a Photo ID when checking in to vote.

The Return Deadline for Absentee Ballots is 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 5

  • If you have an absentee ballot and have not yet returned it, return it as soon as possible.
  • Consider returning your ballot in person to ensure it is received before the deadline. 
    • You must present a Photo ID when returning an absentee ballot in person.
  • Find more information at scVOTES.gov to learn about exceptions for military and overseas voters and how an Immediate Family Member or an Authorized Representative can assist you with returning your absentee ballot.

Key Registration Dates & Deadlines to Know: 

The Statewide General Election is on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

  • The deadline to register in person is Friday, October 4.
  • The deadline to register to vote online or by fax or email is Sunday, October 6.
  • The deadline to register to vote by mail is Monday, October 7 (must be postmarked by this date).

There are several ways to register and it takes just a few minutes!

Already registered? Make sure it’s up to date.

  • If you have moved from one county to another, you must register in your new county by the deadline to be eligible to vote.

There are three easy ways to cast your ballot. Choose one!

  • Vote Early 
    • The early voting period starts on Monday, October 21 and ends Saturday, November 2. Early voting centers are open from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
  • Vote Absentee  
    • The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 25.
  • Vote on Election Day 
    • Polling places are open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

2024 Constitutional Amendment Question

COLUMBIA, SC (August 12, 2024) - The following constitutional amendment question will appear on all ballots in the November 5, 2024 General Election. Please read over the question so you will be familiar with it before casting your vote. 

Proposed Constitutional Amendment 

Must Section 4, Article II of the Constitution of this State, relating to voter qualifications, be amended so as to provide that only a citizen of the United States and of this State of the age of eighteen and upwards who is properly registered is entitled to vote as provided by law?
