Position Summary:

Will provide for the safety of staff and inmates and the security of the detention facility, supervise inmate activities and perform related corrections and law enforcement work as assigned.  Incumbent will work on-call 24 hours, seven days a week for emergency response. 

Major Duties:

• Supervises inmates housed in the detention center to ensure the safety and security of inmates, co-workers, and the general public. 
• Conducts searches of inmates, cells, and property. 
• Assists with booking and releasing inmates, including taking fingerprints and photographs. 
• Sorts and distributes mail to inmates. 
• Administers medications to inmates as prescribed. 
• Conducts inmate head counts. 
• Escorts inmates within the detention center. 
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

Requires High School Diploma or GED equivalent.  Must possess or be able to obtain certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy within one year of hire, must have a valid driver's license and maintain good driving record.  Incumbent must be physically fit and able to walk, run, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl and lift a minimum of 50 pounds.  Incumbent may be exposed to violence and other adverse conditions.  Familiarity with jail operations/correction practices and ability to operate communications equipment are desired.
