Position Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting the director of Veterans Affairs.
Major Duties:
• Advises and provides technical assistance for filing claims; interviews, counsels, and assists applicants in obtaining benefits.
• Develops a working relationship with federal, state, and county departments and agencies.
• Maintains a working relationship with veteran’s organizations, staff, volunteers, and members of news media.
• Provides information regarding department programs and services.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Maintains annual accreditation and training directed by national and state requirements.
• Builds and maintains relationships with schools and organizations within the district.
Knowledge Required:
• Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of veterans’ benefits and services.
• Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping principles and practices.
• Knowledge of job-related software programs.
• Skill in operating a computer and standard office equipment.
• Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.
• Skill in interpersonal relations.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
Physical Demands:
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
WorkEnvironment:
This work is typically performed in an office.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to three years.
Preferred Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or GED
• 2 years’ experience in a similar position.
